Deciphering the Rules of Window Tinting in Florida

With all of the benefits that come with vehicle window tint film packages, there of course has to be rules and regulations in place to ensure that they are safe and effective for you and your passengers. This is precisely why the State of Florida and our Department of Transportation has instilled various regulations surrounding window tint film products, especially those that we install here at Detail Daytona. We have explored them for you so you can go into your installation appointment without any additional questions.

Please review the simple regulations we have outlined below:

For windshields on any size vehicle, we are allowed to install any darkness of non-reflective window tint strip above the manufacturer's AS-1 line. The darkness of window tint film products, especially those installed here at Detail Daytona, must be within a range of certain visible light transmission percentages. For sedans and smaller vehicles plus larger vehicles like trucks, SUVs, and vans, the front driver and passenger side must allow for at least 28% of visible light transmission through. Rear windows and the rear windshield of sedans and smaller vehicles have to allow up to 15% of visible light transmission in, while larger vehicles can allow for only 6% of visible light transmission on those same surfaces.

Of course, these are just the most obvious regulations for the specific window tint film packages here at Detail Daytona. We can most definitely address any other, more intricate rules and regulations that Florida has instituted about window tinting and how it relates to your vehicle. Please call us at

Want to Learn More? Here Are Some FAQs About Window Tinting

  • How long will my window tinting last in Florida?

The lifespan of your selected window tint film package here at Detail Daytona varies based on the quality of the film COMBINED with the environmental factors that are found here in the state of Florida. Yes, the sun is tremendously bright - Precisely why they call us the Sunshine State. However, our selections feature high-quality tint that can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years or more in our specific conditions. Of course, this also pertains to the maintenance routine you provide for your window tint film package.

  • Can I wash my windows after tinting them?

A commonly suggested practice for decontaminating or maintaining your window tint film following installation is to allow a brief period - typically a few days - following the tinting process before initiating regular window cleaning. Once it is ready, we advise you to utilize a gentle at-home cleaning approach that employs a soft cloth in conjunction with a mild, surface-safe detailing solution. Otherwise, it is a much better solution to simply bring your ride to our certified vehicle detailing studio here in Daytona Beach for regular interior detailing.

  • Can I roll down my windows immediately after tinting is installed?

It is usually recommended by our installation team to refrain from rolling down your vehicle’s windows immediately after the tinting procedure has completed, as your selected window tint film package needs time to cure. Similar to hand washing, we encourage you to spend a few days letting it adhere to your glass surfaces. This interval of a few days permits the adhesive to effectively establish a robust bond, facilitating the proper settling of the tint film onto the glass surface so it lasts.

  • Can I install tint over factory tinted windows?

Applying tint over an existing factory tint has the potential to yield an excessively dark visual effect, potentially infringing upon local regulations here in the Daytona Beach, Florida area. To ensure complete compliance and to make an informed choice for your vehicle, please contact Detail Daytona directly for more information. We are experts on the window tint film packages that we install here at our detailing shop, are well-versed with the regulations regarding window tinting in Florida (as disclosed below), and can provide suggestions for you and your vehicle. We are sure to guide you towards a suitable solution.
